We are thrilled to announce the Ro-Boat Race, an international university-level competition co-organized by our partners, MarineTraffic and the University of the Aegean with funding from the CREXDATA project. This unique event challenges teams to design and develop innovative autonomous robotics systems that can perform at sea in real-world conditions. It also served to test the initial setup (architecture concepts, components and filed/sea trials setup) for the collision advoidance service.

The Ro-Boat Race took place in Syros, Greece, at the location of the Dept Product & Systems Design Engineering on July 12, 2023. The competition includes three races:
- The Speed Race: The aim of this race is to cross the finish line first.
- Don’t Crash (Collision Avoidance): Demonstrate a successful autonomous collision avoidance system.
- Endurance/Last one standing: To demonstrate the boat’s durability and capability to go the distance.
The competition is not just about winning the race; it’s a testing ground for innovation. Detailed race rules and guidelines on building your own autonomous boat can be found here.
The Ro-Boat Race is an action supporting the EU “Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters” Charter and is backed by many big names, including BDVA – Big Data Value Association.
