CREXDATA and MePreCiSa Projects Join Forces in Urban Health and Big Data Integration

Date: May 29, 2025

The H2020 CREXDATA project and the MePreCiSa Project have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signaling a strategic alliance aimed at fostering collaboration in urban health research and big data integration. This initiative underscores our commitment to addressing critical societal challenges through innovative, data-driven solutions, and we are proud to legitimize our efforts in front of the European Commission through such strategic partnerships.

The MePreCiSa Project (Precision Medicine for Healthy Cities), coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), is dedicated to developing an open-source, cloud-based platform for integrated health impact assessments in urban environments. It leverages big data technologies to analyze diverse sources, including healthcare records, environmental data, and urban infrastructure. A key innovation of MePreCiSa is its use of anonymized mobility data from mobile phones to generate dynamic indicators of population exposure and health risk, enabling timely and spatially aware public health interventions. The MePreCiSa Project is funded by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service and by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, within the framework of the PRTR and the MRR

The decision to formalize this collaboration stems from the recognition that CREXDATA’s Health Crisis use case faces many similar challenges to those addressed by the MePreCiSa Project. The scope of this collaboration is broad, encompassing joint research in the development of predictive models to explore the impact of urban mobility and environmental factors on public health. This MoU aims to foster innovation in urban health through advanced big data techniques, particularly in population mobility analysis and public health risk assessment.

Dr. Miguel Ponce-de-León, Principal Investigator of MePreCiSa, highlighted the significance of this agreement:

“This agreement will allow us to maintain a close relationship between both projects and continue moving forward, sharing the knowledge we’ve acquired to enhance the quality of our use cases”.

Prof. Antonis Deligiannakis, Coordinator of CREXDATA, further emphasized the mutual benefits:

“This collaboration represents a valuable opportunity to align and strengthen our approaches to predictive modelling and real-time analytics. By working together with MePreCiSa, we can share data, insights, and methodologies to accelerate innovation in data-driven public health strategies that are robust, explainable, and responsive to urban challenges”.

The MoU officially entered into force on May 22, 2025, and is set for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extension. This collaborative effort exemplifies our commitment to advancing research and development in critical areas, aligning perfectly with the objectives set forth by the European Commission.
