Bridging Academia and Maritime Education: Intelligent Systems for Safer Seas

Date: October 22, 2025

On October 21st, 2025, the Intelligent Transportation Systems Laboratory of the University of the Aegean in Syros hosted the Merchant Marine Academy of Syros (AEN Syros) for a presentation and live demonstration of intelligent maritime systems developed within the EU-funded project CREXDATA – Critical Action Planning over Extreme-Scale Data.
The collaboration showcased how AI-driven decision-support tools can enhance safety and efficiency in maritime transport.

🔹 Collision Avoidance Service: real-time prediction and avoidance of vessel collisions using AIS data and COLREG-compliant maneuvers (presented by Giannis S. UAEGEAN)
🔹 Severe Weather Routing Service: voyage planning and re-routing based on live Copernicus forecasts to avoid hazardous conditions (presented by Georgios Grigoropoulos KPLER)

For field testing, the SmartMOVE Lab has developed a fleet of autonomous vessels executing real-time mission scenarios—offering a glimpse into the future of intelligent, autonomous maritime operations.

The discussions with AEN Syros instructors and cadets were particularly valuable, underlining that human expertise and maritime judgment remain irreplaceable, and must guide the responsible integration of emerging technologies.
