Course at ACM Summer School on Data Science 2024: Can computers understand what is happening? An introduction to complex event recognition

Date: July 12, 2024
Location: Athens, Greece

Periklis Mantenoglou and Alexander Artikis, esteemed researchers contributing in CREXDATA, presented an extensive 6-hour course on Complex Event Recognition (CER) during the ACM Summer School on Data Science. Held at the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” in Athens, Greece, the course titled “Can computers understand what is happening?” delved into the sophisticated methodologies and applications of CER.

Participants, including data science professionals and academics, were introduced to the fundamentals of CER, a pivotal field that focuses on identifying intricate patterns within continuous streams of data. The course emphasized the growing significance of CER in a variety of domains such as smart cities, social media analytics, and healthcare.

Mantenoglou and Artikis shared their expertise on the theoretical foundations of CER, covering essential topics such as event processing, pattern detection, and the use of formal methods for recognizing complex events. Additionally, practical applications were demonstrated, highlighting real-world implementations in maritime situational awareness—an area where CER technology has made substantial impacts.

The course was part of a broader initiative by the ACM to foster advanced education in data science, providing attendees with both the knowledge and practical skills needed to apply CER in their respective fields. The interactive nature of the course allowed participants to engage directly with the instructors, gaining deeper insights through hands-on sessions and collaborative discussions.

This event marks a significant contribution to the data science community, reflecting CREXDATA’s commitment to advancing the understanding and application of complex event recognition technologies. For more detailed information about the course and its contents, please visit the event page.
